The map has charming colours (coloured by hand!) and is very detailed. It shows sea currents (warm, cold, direction of the current in summer and winter, drifting ice, permanent ice masses etc) and transport. Depicted are continental railway lines, important telegraph cables, German and other steamer lines with the amount of days it takes to travel. Below the main map is a worldmap of isotherms. To the left and right of that are two maps that show isolines of tides (which area have the same tide). All in all a very informative map. The year 1884 can be found in small print just below the map. This large map comes from the renowned Stieler's Hand-Atlas, printed in the city of Gotha, Germany. All maps from this beautiful atlas show the very high quality of German cartography at the time. Item is printed in the year 1884 and is a true antique. Total / leaf size is aprx. 37 x 47,5cm (14.6 x 18.5 inches). Condition of the map: the paper has visible brown foxing spots from age which gives it an old look - the thick paper is fully intact - otherwise also in good condition. Verso is blank.
