This map shows the distribution of land and water. It has a hemisphere of the world that has the most water on it (bottom left) and a hemisphere that has the biggest landmass (bottom right). Between them is an unusual star-shaped map of the world in polar projection. The year 1879 can be found in the title. This is the year the map was first drawn. This copy of the map was revised and printed in 1886 (this information can be found in small print just below the map area). This large map comes from the renowned Stieler's Hand-Atlas, printed in the city of Gotha, Germany. All maps from this beautiful atlas show the very high quality of German cartography at the time.
